March 6, 1863---The Detriot Draft Riot



MARCH 6, 1863:         

A violent race riot breaks out in Detroit, Michigan in response to the Emancipation Proclamation and the new Draft Law. Dozens of blacks are brutally beaten; at least two are lynched. Thirty five buildings in the black neighborhood are put to the torch. Following the riot, Detroit establishes a permanent Police Department.
